Don't worry about it - In eighteen months you'll be back on the 400 ;)

If you MUST satisfy the powers that be why not use DB2 on windows.  That
way you don't need to change the server UNTIL the application is ready. 
Of course whoever you hire to be the Data base administrator on the SQL
server would probably know of some good packages to synchronize DB2 to
SQL server.
