IMO RPG is great for day to day transaction processing which is the main
application type run on the AS400. C is better for stream handling and not
well suited at data base type processing. Yes you should know both and
other languages for the simple reason, Use the Best Tool for the Task at
Hand.

I had to write a socket server, did not know C. I wrote it in RPG but need
much help from this list and the RPG400 list to translate the C to RPG. If
I new C and had a C compiler available, I would have use C for the task.
Doing LRC and socket streams in RPG is possible but not that strait forward.

As far as GUI presentation, I would choose VB for its ease of windows
programming.

Subject: Midrange career choices

With the apparent assimilation of all the midrange lines into one box, and
the ability to run *nix on any of them, where does that leave a seasoned
AS/400 programmer? Put another way, what should I be doing to prepare for
tomorrow?

Is the dream job going to be "convert from OS/400 RPG to Linux C?"
