When Lou Gerstner started with IBM, it was bleeding. The leadership had to redirect the IBM businesses and get rid of those businesses that IBM did not want to participate. Lou had to essentially keep his finger on the operation of all the businesses so he never named a president. The AS/400 division has always built products directed at a marketplace that most of IBM did not know existed. The AS/400 division built the first workstation and a midrange product line that started with System 3. IBM found that the AS/400 had something good when the other businesses were falling apart. IBM got rid of the federal systems group, low end printers/copiers, global network and purchased groups like Lotus and Tivoli. It is time that Lou steps back into a CEO role and let the leaders here now drive the businesses. I like working with the AS/400. I only hope that I can continue to keep providing the enhancements that go into the AS/400 hardware and software. Richard G. Well, I think Thompson was once the head of the AS/400 division. = So he and Palmisano have at least heard of the AS/400(even though Lou says he has). If you read the article, it kinda mirrors what Bob Tipton's speech was at COMMON. IBM hasn't got a leader that is driven to be = the best in anything(except maybe keeping Wall Street happy). We will see. John Carr - ------------------------------ I'd be interested to have your opinion on this John. I have no idea who those guys are but I'm interested in how they will affect the AS400 environment.
