I have converted comma delimited filemaker pro files and had to write a few programs to go through the data and parse it out. Part of the problem was a few "free" form fields that people just keyed in anything they wanted which included special characters and a host of other things. I tried a bunch of different ways to get the incoming data to look consistent but in the long run I ended up creating a flag field in the existing data (byte 1) that I set if I just couldn't figure the data out and had the users manually key the correct information via green screen.
