One very simple and cost effective senario is to use the standard comms
lines
connected via a modem eliminator (you can even use your ECS line's for this
but it's best if you don't). Use IBM's passthru for interactive use and
distribution lists for file transfer.
Beware of moving large spool files, they take lot of bytes.
