Printing Problem via Perle 594e -- MIDRANGE-L

Could anybody help with the following printing problem.

We have been running workstations and printers remotely from an AS400 using a
Perle 594e quite happily. A new printer (4230) has now been attached but will
not accept spoolfile output of 12cpi. A message is issued stating that the
device does not support it.
When the device description auto created it came up as a 5256. We have changed
the description to others printer types but nothing yet seems to work.
Can anybody suggest a configuration that would work ?
