Jim,

  You are correct. My comments specifically targeted V.90 modems. The
signal from these units can be carried all over the country on standard
circuits. (which interestingly are carried digitally at 56K. Hmmmm.)

  DSL is a COMPLETELY new deal.  New equipment (the DSLAM) is required
in any CO or SLIC where DSL is supported and is connected directly to
the copper pair that runs to your house/business.  A complimentary unit
is installed at the customer end (basically a router).  Todays
technology requires that the DSLAM to Customer wire be not more than
about 12000 feet long.  That's likely to go up but not fast enoug for
those of us out in the boonies.  Also at least in Ameriwreck land they
are not yet placing DSLAMs in the SLICs which limits the number of
customers that can get DSL. From the DSLAM to the internet, traffic is
carried via ATM back to some internet access point at very high speeds.
I believe some implementations of DSL have up to 8Mbs capability.

 Who knows what new technology will come out in the coming years to run
on that copper? My Guess: It'll be faster and cheaper.
