Stu,
The IP address is split into 2 portions, the network/subnet portion
identified by the 1 bits in the mask and the host address identified by the
0 bits in the mask.
(However a mask of all 1 bits identifies a single host).

You will need to allocate a number that does not begin 192.1.26 - 192.1.27.5
would be fine as long as the 192.1.27 subnet is not being used elsewhere. A
router will be needed and devices with 192.1.26 addresses will need a
default gateway defined (pointing to the router) as the 192.1.27.5 address
is not directly visible to the 192.1.26 addresses. The router will need to
be told that it can reach the 192.1.27.5 via both 192.1.26.6 and 192.1.26.7
