Hello all: MD5 does work on the AS/400. We even took the 'C' code from the RFC 1321 (Request for comments), corrected the assignment error and recompiled on the As/400 using the C compiler on the CISC machine some years ago. I believe the CIPHER MI instruction will perform the same function except the user would have to read and input file and perform the necessary conversion from EBCDIC to ASCII. The answer probably lies with the addition of a (dare I say it...) Code Page conversion as part of the AS/400 implementation which would convert any input to ASCII. We actually setup this system to be used for remote access to COMMON over the internet. Unfortunately this system was another one that they never used. MD5 is not considered as safe as the more recent Secured Hash-1 which generates 160 bytes of hash. Also, let's say that your program issues a CALL to the MD5 program to check some sort of code. Remember that inside programmers with access to the STRDBG command can always trace this call and override the parameters in order to find out the information.
