At one company I worked for in the distant past (who shall remain nameless, except that Don R. knows who they are ;), the "bonus" was directly related to how much billable overtime you had put in for the year. Quality of work had nothing to do with it, nor did customer satisfaction. You got your "bonus" once a year, at the January meeting. If you left the company any time during the year, including the day before the meeting, you got nothing. Note I am not complaining that the policy was illegal, because after all it was a "bonus." But talk about demoralization of the troops. The revolving door got really busy after the meeting each year. And I know of at least one case where an employee was terminated before the meeting so his "bonus" wouldn't have to be paid. Which is why when I worked for that company, I worked at an hourly rate. They wanted me bad enough that they agreed to it.
