Nina, I agree with you completely. Bonuses do seem to be a no win situation. I have worked in several companies where bonuses were a portion of your salary. But that always depended on how the company did. Of course they never met their goals, so I never saw one bonus. Where I am now we are on a project that has the possibility of a bonus if the project comes in under budget. But the rules keep changing, as does the expected result. Fortunately for me I knew nothing of this bonus when I got hired, so my agreed on compensation did not consider bonuses, if it had I wouldn't be here. If you are not willing to pay your employees what they are worth all of the time, what would make someone think that if that elusive bonus is dangled in front of them they would work any harder. Miss the first one and the dedication is gone. And if you have an employee who is not willing to go the extra mile to complete their work, either you need someone new or your expectations are way out in left field.
