Yes, it uses roughly the same amound of tape space, but it is somewhat faster. A restore is a lot faster, especially if you have large logical files (and you used the default ACCPTH(*NO) during save) and/or you have a lot of members in files. And SAVSTG also saves things like spoolfiles, contents of dataqueues etc. SAVSTG is ideal to use before an OS/400-upgrade.
