Dave, You most likely have a mis-match between the arguments being passed to the function and the signature of the function. I suggest you carefully review the SQL Reference sections Function Resolution and Promotion of Data Types. I have seen similar problems in the past where the function declared fixed length character strings but the function was actually being passed variable length character strings.
