This reminds me of a show I once watched on how companies go about reverse 
engineering software.  Basically it involves the programmer leaving the 
company who owns the software that he has written.  He then goes to the 
other company and makes a deal.  He then re-writes the code in such a way 
that  once the software is de-compiled (by force), it leaves clues as to 
how the software is developed.  The programmer then leaves the company and 
will not return (remember he's made a deal and will receive revenue later). 
 Another programmer or programmer(s) are hired to crack the software. 
 After they determine how it is done, they then re-write the software, 
based on helpful clues left by the original programmer, then copyright it 
and market it.
