HR can and will use "code words" to be able to get the message across. It is
up to the interviewer to ask the right questions and note changes of
inflection and jargon. 

Q. How was XX's attendance?
A. He thought it was satisfactory.
Q. What do you mean by that? (if they are a bit dense)
A. Just what I said, he thought it was OK.

Of course telling the truth can get you in trouble.
