We have IBM come out and pay thru the nose for them to configure raid/mirroring of the drives. In theory by stopping the mirroring, of course in DST after you have a complete backup, you will suddenly have lots of unused dasd. Don't forget to keep mirroring the load source drive. Now you know that only like drives can be mirrored and have planned out what drive go into what raid set. Just define your raid sets and your done. But you have these drives with lots of data and other drives with no data. You have lots of free space but no performance gain at this time. Thank IBM that you now have the STRASPBAL command or its replacement, ??, can't remember the new version. Once you have re-balance your drives you should see a performance increase due to the number of arms working for you. There is some performance overhead on calculating the check sums but should be done by the IOP. The real Gotcha are going the other way. Christopher K. The backup and recovery Guide explains how to perm end mirroring, but what about Raid 5 setup? Anybody do this in the past? Any suggestions, ideas or gotchas I should look out for? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
