You bring up an interesting question, but I personally would be less concerned the shelf life of CD data than I would be with the practical life of the CD _drives_. For how many more years will we all still have CD drives connected to our computers? Will we be able to get data off of a CD and back onto a computer 5 or 7 years from now? At home I have 6 10MB bernoulli cartridges (8.5" x 11") 4 IRWIN 40MB tapes, and about 200 5.25" diskettes on which something valuable might be stored... I just don't have the technical ability to read them anymore. Although I could easily find a working 5.25" diskette drive and add it to my desktop, where the heck am I going to find a working 10MB bernouilli box??? :( jte - -- John Earl johnearl@400security.com The PowerTech Group 206-575-0711 PowerLock Network Security www.400security.com - -- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 16:06:11 -0400 From: "Stacy Lampman" <slampman@lcl-ltd.com> Subject: RE: HTTP Server I have a TIMW at all three instances. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Stacy L. It is a bit tricky, because different ODBC drivers will use different IBM servers. Most use the DRDA server, which only let's you see the SQL connect statement, not the individual SQL (SELECT, UPDATE, etc) data manipulation statements. This is a problem because the names of the objects being operated on is not readily available to an exit program. The IBM ODBC driver generally goes through the Native DataBase server, though there are some other servers it uses (RTVOBJINF, SQLSRV, etc.) It all depends on what information your ODBC request is asking for (did you just SELECT, or have you asked to browse a list of files before choosing the file you want to operate on). The problem with trying to map these servers is that they are organized more for the benefit of the programmers who wrote the servers as opposed to being written for the benefit of the programmers who will use the servers. You really have to spend some time with them to get a picture of what each server does, and how it proposes to do it. jte Chris Bipes wrote: > > Thanks, > > I was looking for the exit points for OBDC servers and was unable to find > the right ones. > > Christopher K. You really have to spend some time with them to get a picture of what each server does, and how it proposes to do it. jte ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 May 2000 14:59:01 -0700 From: Jon Erickson <jerickson@800.com> Subject: RE: Barcode scanner Check out Telxon or Symbol. My guess is because that is not a supported single-step upgrade. To get to V4R4 from V3R7 you must upgrade to V4R3 first. Then V4R4. If I decide to rename the APPN connection name, I can never get a connection. The 400 responds that the name has changed for this Adapter address. So, I go to the 400 and delete the connection description there. No effect. Somewhere on the 400 is a table of all of the adapter addresses that have ever been defined with a corresponding connection name. Anyone know where this is? Or know how to change the connection name? They are RF devices that communicate to an SNC (i.e.PC based, black box type controller) which is TCP/IP connected to the LAN and the AS400. The Symbol devices look like 5250 Telnet sessions. You'll need to watch out for the differences in screen size for the Signon screen and application screens. If you want more info, I can check with our Industrial Enigneer who works directly with them (send private EMail). Check WWW.SYMBOL.COM, <http://www.SYMBOL.COM> the pictures on the left side include the one we use. IBM is making things easier. When you upgrade to V4R4, the upgrade process creates QINSYS (what your QSYS looked like prior to upgrade), QINMEDIA (whats on the media, i.e. CD's), and QINPRIOR (what things looked like from the prior release). The only gotcha is that certain conflicts can exist between the Media and your changes, and in that case, the media wins. For example, if you made a restricted command *public = use, and the media supplies public = exclude, then you will get public = exclude. You still have the QINSYS to figure out what you had, so even if you didn't document things (which is still a very good idea), you have the info still there. But things like adding private authorites for your own user profiles will still be there, after the upgrade. Great Huh!! Now all us old-timers can almost toss those 'sysupdate' programs we ! so lovingly maintain. Change is good!! Good Luck. Glenn Birnbaum The upgrade will replace all IBM objects. If you have changed anything for IBM supplied objects, the changes will have to be reapplied after the operating system is installed. We have a utility program that we maintain and run after our upgrades that restores command default values and printer files. I've never tried to change any IBM system programs, if you have, you'll have to reapply the modifications. Oh, you ask, how do you know what's been changed? You don't unless you have documented you changes. That why, in my humble opinion, it's not a good thing to fool with mother nature and IBM. A question, why are you going with V4R3 and not V4R4?
