Some more info that might help

To monitor condition of tape media,
A) use a different volume-id for each tape ... I use a combination of letters 
signifying brand name of the media (some brand names perform better with some 
drives),
vendor we bought it from (some retail channels do not store media well),
capacity of the media,
general function we using it for (nitely, save-21, before/after upgrades, 
off-line etc.).

B) STRSST / 1 / 1 / 4 ... pick your media type

You get statistics & you can print the whole picture for reference
on failure rate by media & whether performance is so bad that IBM reccommends 
getting rid of that tape

To copy a tape you have to have 2 drives
