Which model do you think does this ?? We know for a fact, because that was our reality for many years on AS/436. We could not use our tape drive & our CD Rom at the same time. We had to map the port to one or the other. Since we used the tape drive daily for backups, this meant the CD Rom was useable only when we re-mapped so we could not use the tape drive until we were done with the CD Rom & mapped it back. Now what I do not know is how common that reality is across the AS/400 model lines. I suspect that at the low end of the model range there might be a limitation on the number of hardware ports available for which this sort of thing shows up in other scenarios. I have also seen the scenario on PCs ... when I first got a tape backup system on my home PC in 1993, tape backups were a rarety in the home PC market & the only way I could get it installed was to use the same port as my diskette drive, which meant that only one could be run at a time ... fortunately the switcheroo was built into my tape backup software, so that it grabbed the port until I was done, then returned the port to the diskette drive. > From: list_receiver@csiltd.co.uk (Mike Buglass) > > I think you are getting mixed up with the System 36 virtual machine. When the port was mapped to the tape drive, we could not use the CD Rom. When the port was re-mapped to the CD Rom, we could not use the tape drive It was one or the other, irrespective of SSP or OS/400 We are now on a 170 - some stuff is faster, some stuff slower than same tasks on 436 - on balance, I am not impressed with the change in performance ... I have been given a mountain of re-programming work because of jobs that ran efficently on 436 that now need to be re-thought to eventually work as good on the 170 ... same version of OS Al Macintyre ©¿© http://www.cen-elec.com MIS Manager Programmer & Computer Janitor Y2K is not the end of my universe, but a re-boot of that old Chinese curse.
