Actually, for a few bucks a month you can have an AS/400 logon with all 
the stuff you need if I understand correctly.  There's no need for you to 
be saddled with operating system problems or with networking.  Just get an 
account and develop to your heart's content.

I think we knew this, you have to pay through the nose to get the decent
development tools for the AS/400, and for the AS/400 itself, which 
means developers find it unaffordable unless they have to backing of an
established company. 

Theres no way I as an individual can afford to buy a '400 and the
various tools I need to create a whizz-bang utility, tool or app.
Thats why i'm learning C++, and soon Java and Visual Basic on a PC,
because I can afford to buy those tools, and if I can't I can beg or
borrow. People will lend me a PC and some software for a few weeks or
months.
