  • Subject: Token Ring problems...

We are having an intermittent network problem, that may or may not be as/400
based (we are getting a network sniffer in for more information)
All clients lose their connection to the as400, and can't ping the token
ring card. (the as400 has two ethernet cards also, and these are fine)

However, the as400 is still "seeing" the ring, because we still get "adapter
has inserted into the ring" messages. We have even resorted to trying it on
its own ring, with just one client pc - it see's the pc join and leave the
ring, but won't ping.

This has happened 3 times over the last few weeks. Ending the tokenring
interface and restarting it has no effect, neither does ending/starting tcp.
The only thing that seems to bring it back is to IPL.
I've run internal diagnostics on the card , replaced the cable, and done a
cable wrap test. All fine.
No ptf's had been put on for a couple of months; i put the current hipers on
last week, and it did exactly the same last night.

Has anyone heard of anything like this? I have 4 possible culprits:
1. os/400 problem - i lean towards this because of the "ipl brings it back"
reason
2. dislodged card - will check next weekend when i have some scheduled down
time
3. intemittently faulty card - so why do i have to IPL to recover?
4. other network issue - so why doesn't it come back up of its own accord.

Anyone got any ideas?

Regards,
Stuart
