Gang -- Here's the problem: A Visual Basic program wants to be able to retrieve one or more records from the AS/400. Our solution: Write a CGI program (in RPG as to leverage existing skills) that will accept an SQL string and return an XML string which contains the results. Beautiful. Gorgeous. REMEMBER how I kept raving about XML? Well HERE is an example that we plan to use. Since it's XML, it's easy to call the CGI program from my IE 5.0 browser and get a table in my web browser. Because it's XML, it's based on a standard. No "routers" or ODBC; just plain old text. To that end; does anyone already HAVE this code available??? Later, when the client replaces the multiple AS/400's with multiple Windows 2000 machines (more on this later), we only need to return XML; NO changes to the clients. RE: Win2000. The director here, who previously owned an IBM Business Partner company and was an AS/400 bigot, recently saw a "dog and pony" show about Win2000. He returned and predicted "within five years, Windows 2000 is going to take over the world, with the exception of Linux". THAT is quite a prediction! Then again, I remember back in 1994 when someone on Newslink returned from seeing a demo of Microsoft's "Chicago" and said "OS/2 is dead". The IBM faithful jumped on him, but ... well ... the rest is history, as is said.
