I was working at a paper mill in West Carrollton (outside Dayton) Ohio, and we needed to print our carton labels "on the fly". We purchased one of those original "create a label" programs that ran on the AS/400; the ones where you type in the X and Y coordinates and the font name and text etc etc. Problem was, we had THOUSANDS of different products. Some products had their own unique label, others belonged to a "family". I LOVE writing stuff that uses a Finite State Machine, so I wrote a program (didn't have SQL at the time) to allow the users to specify wildcard entries when assigning labels to products. For example, Label 123 could relate to the following products: 961002 960302 964* 96500* It was really cool. Doesn't sound like much now, but believe me I was proud of it. You could include exceptions in the list, too. Let's keep it AS/400-centric. I'll post mine soon.
