Have you checked your hardware speed of connection?  Depending on volume of 
data to be delivered, that could be your bottleneck.  Are the AS/400s in 
close physical proximity?  Computers can be connected via modem-eliminator 
which simulates 1 modem & each end & the phone line ... since you not paying 
for ma bell, you want the fastest connection the CPU will support.
