1. Yes.  Your REFFLD should reference the database field you are
printing/displaying.
2. Advantages: If you change the database field's attributes, you can
(usually) get away with just recompiling the printer & display files that
reference it.  (The exception is when you increase the length of a field
such that it overlays another on the printer/display format, but then the
recompile would fail and you would know what to do to fix it.)  SDA & RDA
(and perhaps third party utilities?) recognize and translate the attributes
from the REFFLD, so you know as soon as you lay it out on the screen the
attributes of the field.  BTW, a little-known feature is that if you define
the database field with an edit code or edit word in the PF DDS, that will
carry over with the REFFLD on printer & display DDS (also on WRKQRY).
Disadvantage:  If you are editing printer & display file DDS via SEU, you
will not see the attributes of the referenced field in REFFLD.
