On the S/36... a General Ledger routine that needed to explode GL Codes out to other codes which then could be exploded out as well. I sort of faked RPG recursive calling by reading the record from the file, deleting it, then writing a new one at the end. By sequentially processing this whole mess it just kept going, blowing out new codes, until it hit EOF.
