Mine was COBOL based on a WANG VS which interfaced with our corporate AS/400 where all the financials were. We had, (at the time) 62 remote stores, each with a WANG VS 5000 for Order entry and inventory, a WANG VS 5000 at corporate for communication, development and maintenance, and an AS/400 Model E50, which replaced a WANG VS 10000. Connectivity consisted of Point-to-Point analog via WANGNET, which was eventually upgraded to Switched 56kb digital lines, and 10BaseT between the corporate VS & AS/400. Daily we retrieved each stores transactions, uploaded to the AS/400 for updating, then sent back the updated data to the stores, all through our automated nightly update process. I wrote an interactive application to reside on the corporate WANG VS that tracked the progress of each stores transaction files, enabling the operator to initiate a file send/receive to/from store(s) & corporate. The application interfaced with WANGNET and FTP applications to push/pull files from either WANG or AS/400 systems. A year or two after my leaving, they upgraded the network and migrated from the WANG VS using COBOL to Unix based machines with AcuCobol. My, how we grow,... Jon A.
