For me syntax is not the biggest worry, it is learning how the language
treats variable types that gives me fits. As in the case of perl you can
treat a scalar like an integer, or a character or a string. And there
are some other weird things you can do with hashes and lists that blow
me away. 
But learning what you can and cannot do is the tough part, especially if
you write in more than two languages.
