Yes, diagnostics don't get monitored, only Exceptions (escape messages, mostly).

You need to set your backup job to use the system reply list for inquiry
messages (SBMJOB or JOBD)
You need to set up a reply in the system reply list.  Then, you can
handle things in your program.
