Since the prototype is the only part of the procedure that actually appears in the calling program, it is required so that the compiler can know how parameters will be passed. The prototype formally defines the calling conventions for the procedure. It's more than just a parameter list. It can define the return value and its type, as well as the type of each parameter, whether the parameter is optional or required, whether it can vary in length, if it is passed by value or by reference, and whether operational descriptors will be used.
