Try the FTP command HASH ON. Hash on will show a # for every 1024 bytes of data sent. At least that way you can see if the file is actually being transmitted. Perhaps (I doubt it) the FTP client doesn't see anything from the FTP server for a long time (while it's transmitting on port 20) so assumes the connection is closed. Like I said, I doubt that, since FTP should be prepared to receive lots of silence while a file transfer is taking place. Other than that, check that port 20 is not blocked.
