Some think that the repeated heating and cooling of the internal parts when you 
turn it off and on
causes more stress on the system than just leaving it powered up all of the 
time.

I've had a some kind of AS/400 in my home for about 5 years and I've always 
turned it off every
night.

I had one problem with my current 170, but it was a UPS problem and that thing 
never gets turned
off.

I see no problem with the repeated IPL of the system.  All my AS/400
(except for the Internet server) are IPLed daily.
