When you compile a program, display file or command, the previous version of that object is renamed (using an internal naming convention) and moved to QRPLOBJ. This avoids a "routing step error", which was a common problem with the System/38. The QRPLOBJ library is implicitly cleared during each IPL. This was an effective maintenance strategy on CISC AS/400's, but not so effective today. 48 bit CISC AS/400's had to be re-IPLed periodically to recover addressability. Most users did this weekly or monthly. The 64 bit RISC AS/400's can literally go for years without an IPL! There is a TAA Tool to delete objects in QRPLOBJ by age, called DLTOLDQRPL.
