Hello Stuart,

The reason IBM tell you to apply the group PTFs first is to save you some time 
in the whole 
PTF process.  The internal PTF index contains information about superseeded and 
prerequisite 
PTFs (that's why DSPPTF can show so much information).  The group PTFs are more 
recent and the 
PTF process will not apply PTFs from the CUME that are superseeded by PTFs you 
already have 
applied.

If you did it your way you'ld be doubling up on some work -- apply PTFs from 
CUME, then apply 
more recent replacement PTFs from group.
