We are on V4R4 also, and there is a known bug. When you have the same user profile handle on the AS/400 and the network, but the passwords are different, you will NEVER get to the AS/400 files unless your QMAXSIGN system value is set to something other than *NOMAX. It may not be the same situation you are having, but it got us past a problem we had. We were getting the same prompt you describe and it would not take the correct password. Until we changed our QMAXSIGN value we could only access the AS/400 files when the passwords were the same on both systems.
