Do you IPL every weekend?  You can change the controller description to 
varyon at Ipl=*yes.

Is there something else that varies them off?  Trying to vary them off as 
a security measure during backups is prone to failure.  If you don't vary 
them off at the same time often it will build another controller.  Unless 
you have the autocreate controllers turned off.

By doing a WRKOBJD you can see the last changed, (or is that last used) 
date.  I think a vary will change that.

Actually, I agree.  Do I have something wrong that these controllers would
need to be varied on every Monday.  If we do not do this they do not talk.
I knew I could use this command in the startup procedure...I just wondered
if it is SOP and I just didn't know it.
