Eric,

You're assuming it's use for multiple backups. We use ENDOPT(*LEAVE)
regularily in our standard nightly backup to separate different types of
data.

For example:

SAVLIB LIB(some libs) DEV( TAP01) ENDOPT(*LEAVE)
SAVOBJ OBJ(QDFTJOBSCD) LIB(QUSRSYS) DEV(TAP01) OBJTYPE(*JOBSCD)
                ENDOPT(*LEAVE)
SAV DEV('/QSYS.LIB/TAP01.DEVD') OBJ('/SomeDir/*') ENDOPT(*LEAVE)
SAVSECDTA DEV(TAP01) ENDOPT(*REWIND)

See what I mean? One tape/set per night. Regular rotation schedule with
off-site storage.

not advisable to use the same tape for multiple backups. It is much better
to use one tape per day and be certain that the unused tapes are moved
off-site.
> As for saving your file while it active - if you have a exclusive lock on
the object all day, you can not save it. Using the "Save while Active"
feature is a good idea but there must be a moment in time (albeit a small
one depending on how your set your command up) when the Save can get a shot
at it.
