IBM denies it, but there is a LOT of 13G drive that are faulty. We change the tape drive 6 times in two year at one of our sites!! We also had some problems at other sites. IBM explanation was that the usage of less than 13G tapes were damaging the tape drive prematurely. You are not alone even if IBM tells you so.
