When our customers do their CISC to RISC migrations, we have them start with a fresh operating system on the RISC machine and just transfer their datafiles, configurations, security data, etc. This seems to work fairly well, with occassional minor glitches that are easily and quickly taken care of. I do not know if this will work with all software or not, as far as the transferring of just the datafiles. Good luck! Either way, it is always "interesting". ____________________Reply Separator____________________ Subject: RE: CISC to RISC Migrations Author: <MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com> Date: 12/3/99 8:14 AM From my experience, don't upgrade but replace. Buy the new box with a new license and serial number. Call all your venders and get there latest RISC versions. Re-create all your user profiles and directory entries. Then configure the two machines to talk to each other. Finally write a program to convert your data from the CISC machine and old software to the new software versions. Use DDM to read the CISC and write locally on the RISC. Now your venders may have the update programs to convert the data files which you can save/restore/convert. Last step is to move all the hardware from the CICS to the RISC. This gives you the cleanest new RISC system possible. OK I know I will be flamed for this approach, but our CICS to RISC was done poorly and I spent months cleaning up garbage from the restore. Your other option is to read the road map for CICS to RISC and follow very carefully and closely. DO NOT skip even the smallest step. Good Luck, Christopher K.
