Chuck, Apple paid Xerox for the use of that particular innovation, so they had the rights to it. Also, many of the user interface refinements that are taken for granted now were added by Apple. This includes "click and drag" as opposed to the Xerox "click-move-click" modal interface. See <http://www.starway.org/~arnaud/Raskin.html> In turn, Apple granted a license to Microsoft to use the interface in Windows, mainly in return for Microsoft developing Word for the Mac. The dispute arose because Apple claimed that their agreement allowed Microsoft to use the interface only in Windows 1.0, and not later releases.
