  • Subject: What to have on a new AS/400

Hi everyone:

I am thinking about buying an entry level AS/400
model 170. It will be kept at my house and I will mostly be using it to do
ILE programming, passthrough to other systems, CGI programming, and to
learn some networking basics. I would also like to connect it to an Ethernet
so it can work with my other 2 PC,s and try to have everything connect to
the internet (maybe through a cable connection?) That way I, and other
people can sign-on to it no matter where we are.
I'm not sure if all this is possible, and if it is how much would it cost to
have a setup like that.

I am a software developer and not really a hardware person, so for me this
will definitely be a learning experience, but since its not at a company
site I don't have to worry about users trying to cut my head off If I take
their network down :-)

This is the configuration I am planning on for the 170. Please let me know
what you think.

Hardware:
        9406-170 e-Server System Unit
        Modem
        PCI Cable V.24/EIA 232 20-ft
        Op con Cable
        Remote control Panel Cable
        Model 170 Processor 128 MB
        2.5GB 1/4" Cart Tape (PCI)
        4.19GB Disk Units (3) total 12.57GB

Software:
        ILE RPG for AS/400
        Query
        ADTS
IBM SW subscription 1 Year Prepaid

Note: I am inclined to remove the modem (to expensive) and the ADTS software
(not sure if I will use it)
I would likely buy a used modem somewhere for far less than the the U$460.00
I'm being quoted.

Thanks and Best Regards
Mauricio Della-Quercia
