  • Subject: Ouput CSV file from EXCEL to transfer to AS/400 physical file via Client Access

I have a EXCEL spreadsheet with 7 columns, which was created
by importing a print file ouput from a report writer, each field
has double quotes around it with commas separating the values.

EXCEL imports the file fine, the first field is a alpha field 15 bytes
long although sometimes the value may only contain 3-15 bytes of data
so I go to the column properties and give it a column width of 15 and
specify that it is a TEXT field.

The rest of the fields are numeric 11 bytes with 2 decimals.

When I save the file from EXCEL using SAVE AS and specify the file
type to "SAVE AS" as a CSV file EXCEL does not place double quotes
around the 1st field which is defined as a text field in the
spreadsheet.

I have tried defining the first field as GENERAL also but I cannot get
EXCEL to place double quotes around the first field which should have
them because the field can contain alpha characters and so in turn is
defined as character on the AS/400 physical file.

So as you can see the file xfer to the AS/400 of the .CSV file aborts
because the AS/400 is expecting a character field but thinks I'm trying
to give it a numeric field since the field does not have double quotes
around it.

How can I make EXCEL place double quotes around a field when saving it
as a .CSV file?

TIA,

Billy
