I can highly recommend a browser add-on product called interMute
(www.intermute.com).  It can optionally suppress ads, JavaScript,
popups, background sounds, animated GIFs, auto refresh, cookies, etc.
And it's very configurable.  If you want JavaScript on for a particular
site, just add a filter for that site and set it to allow JavaScript.
Obviously you'd have to have JS enabled in your browser.

It works with all the major browsers, including Opera.

I believe it runs on multiple platforms, so you should be able to get a
version that works on Linux.

I should add that I'm in no way associated with the company; just a
satisfied user.
