According to the page header on your e-mail: Received: from Kitten.mcs.com ([192.160.127.90]) by internet-server.conexfreight.com (post.office MTA v2.0 0813 ID# 0-40010U100L2S100) with ESMTP id AAA308 for <jlangston@conexfreight.com>; Fri, 5 Nov 1999 15:40:40 -0800 it seems to be set by the POP3 server when it receives it. There are a lot of these in the header, one from each POP server the message went through. Your message went through 7 POP3 servers (including my own) before it got to me (although 2 of the POP3 servers seem to be the same machine, midrange-l.com which routed the message through itself, interesting). I just sort mine by thread (using Netscape) so never really notice it too much. Somehow Netscape figures out the right order for the thread. Must be other info in the header.
