Race is not always to the swift.  Despite what Bill Gates has said about the
success of his products, technical superiority does not guarantee market
dominance. <g>

Also, seems to me that back in the 70s Don King promoted a series of boxing
matches  for one of the TV networks that was an elimination tournament.  It
never completed--there was some question as to when the winners were
decided.  Puts a different spin on "contender."
