1. David will not allow the list used for the purpose to hirering consultants
2. Goldman Sachs & Co (or the vendor) will probably not pay my travel and
   accomodation costs 

But you can call me a fool, if theese (free) tips can not cut the proces to the 
half (it does in most 'modern' massrecord programs on AS/400):
1. Process most files in arrival seq. WITH buffering enabled. 
2. If selection is needed, do it in RPG/COBOL or FMTDTA
3. If a special seq is needed consider a FMTDTA
4. If any type of QRY's are unavoidable, then optimize it for that run
   using the standard optimization methods + a good knowledge of the 
   environment and workload.
5. Consider moving smaller CHAIN-files into internal program tables.
