At one company someone wanted me to write a conversion between
Saudi Arabian dates and Gregorian dates. I looked everywhere (this
was pre-internet) and could find almost nothing on the Saudi Arabian
calendar.

I got a hold of the last 5 years caladars for Saudi Arabia and tried to
analyze them, being totally confused as some years had 252 days, some
had 380 days, some had 290 days, and so on. Months were totally
confusing also, none having the same number of days.

I went to the library and found a book on the Saudi Arabian calendar,
and copied a page out of it and gave it to my boss. If I remember
correctly it said something like:

"A new month is when two Saudi Arabians of high regard are walking
across a field at night and see a full moon."

Apparently, the Saudi Arabian calendar is based on the lunar cycle, and
not the solar cycle. The Lunar cycle is something like 28.2 days long
or so. I found a formula to do the conversion, tried it, and it was inaccurate
so as not to be used.

I told my boss if he wanted to do this he would have to get the saudi arabian
calendar put into the system in database format and convert from there.

Serpardum
