It is amazing how many people go for the PC attached system. And
then batch upload their data. This would be as high tech as
upgrading to Key-to-Diskette devices.

Here at Dekko we use IBM hand held Wireless PTC's. They show a
quadrant of a 5250 screen and put the data right into the screen
application. We started out having to purchase a special card for
the 400, but that is history. Now we use IP. Once we were featured
with these somewhere on IBM's web page, but I can't remember where.

Subject: attaching a bar code reader to a 319x terminal

Could someone please share their experiences on attaching
a bar code reader (Laser preferred), to a 319x terminal?

I see some even have RF (radio frequency) ability.

In order to cut down on keying errors, we will require
certain vendors to bar code some data on their packing
list to us.

We currently have a complete PC based data collection
system that could do this, but it appears that the prices
of the equipment that can attach to a dumb terminal is
such that it may be easier (I'm sorry "cost effective") to
just "tweak" the interactive application to read the bar
code, instead of writing a interface to the PC based data
collection system. Also, if I do it interactively, I can
perform edits that cannot be done through the PC
based system.
