>Can you have OBDC without Client Access? It is nearly mind-boggling how often this question arises! For clarity, let's rephrase the question three ways: Can you use CA/400's ODBC without a CA/400 license? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Yes, with OS/400 V3R7 and up. Also licensed with OS/400 V3R7 and up are the OLE DB data provider, OpsNav, CA/400 Windows DLLs and APIs, and Graphical Access (on pre-Express versions; Express excludes this feature). These features may be installed and deployed on as many desktops as you need, without charge. For these components, pre-V3R7 users do need a CA/400 license for each user. For V3R7 and up, the _only_ parts of CA/400 that must be licensed are the terminal and printer emulator and data transfer. Can you use CA/400's ODBC without installing CA/400? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- No, you must at least install the base components of CA/400 for the ODBC driver to work. For pre-Express versions, this means enduring the four background CWBxxxx processes for network file and print, even if you don't intend to use them. Are there third-party alternatives to CA/400's ODBC -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes. Check www.hit.com, www.walldata.com, and www.starquest.com for three vendors with AS/400 ODBC alternatives. rp +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
