1) The problem with many EDI implementations is the non standard standards. For example, one standard for a PO is ANSI X.12 using the 850. However, there are an infinite possibilities of laying out the 850. What you may do for one customer will probably not apply to the next. 2) Another problem with EDI implementations is the trick of integrating with your line of business app's. I am talking going from the rip-and-read approach (also known as the worlds slowest, most expensive fax machine), to computer-to-computer integration. Most ERP systems these days aren't setup for a batch interface, (like the old Mapics key from diskette interface). And even if you pay extra for the module, (or modules, depending on the number of transaction sets) to do this, then you'll probably end up customizing them for each customer you do business with. 3) Who, in their right mind, wants another computer between their ERP system and the EDI flow? We purchased AS/400 software because of all of the inherent strengths of the 400 AND the ease of us doing the integration, AND lack of links in the chain to break. Why would we want to put our EDI processing on a WinTel/Unix/Linux solution? Forgive me if 'in their right mind' is an opinion and a precursor to a flame war. I was just bringing up a viewpoint. bdobrowolski@nisusa.com on 08/19/99 01:58:59 PM Please respond to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com@Internet To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com@Internet cc: Fax to: Subject: Re: Harbinger Trusted Link - GUI only?
